Field update #30

A long time has passed since our last field update. And a lot has happened since!
For the first time, our new manager on the field, Boniface, is reporting the news from the City of Ubuntu Site in Sanki.

Harvesting and Preparing for the Next Season

August at City of Ubuntu Sanki was marked by both celebration and preparation. The team successfully harvested maize, soy, and melon planted earlier in the year, while also clearing land for the upcoming second season of maize and beans. At the plantation, more than 55 fruit trees were added, alongside 230 banana and plantain shoots. These will not only provide additional food but also serve as natural protection for young fruit trees against the harsh sun.

Expanding Our Livestock and Medicinal Garden

Beyond crop cultivation, we’ve been strengthening our livestock program. A new rabbit hutch was built in August to expand production, and new animals are expected soon. The medicinal garden also continues to play a vital role for the community, offering natural remedies that complement modern treatments. However, despite careful manual watering, some plants are struggling to survive the dry season—a reminder of how critical consistent water access is for every part of our work.

Facing Challenges in Sanki

Life at Sanki is not without obstacles. The rare rains this season have made it especially difficult to keep plants healthy. Manual watering, while essential, is exhausting and insufficient for larger-scale farming. Equipment breakdowns have also slowed progress, with the mini-tractor out of service and solar batteries in need of replacement. Even so, the team continues to adapt, making use of local labor when needed and staying committed to advancing each project step by step.

The Urgent Need for Irrigation

The most pressing challenge we face is water. Without reliable rainfall, our crops, fruit trees, and medicinal plants cannot reach their full potential. An irrigation system would be a game-changer, transforming hard manual labor into a sustainable solution that protects harvests, boosts productivity, and ensures food security for the community. This is the next step we must take to safeguard the future of City of Ubuntu Sanki.

Hope and Progress Through Ubuntu

Despite the difficulties, the spirit of Ubuntu carries the team forward. Each new seed planted, each tree added to the orchard, and each structure built is a sign of progress. The dedication and creativity of the Sanki team demonstrate what is possible when a community works together, even under challenging conditions.
